Essay to be submitted by email.
The Bible used in Western European Christianity can consist of 66 or more separate books.
1. Write an essay of at least 500 words using allegory, rhetoric and logic explaining that since the purpose of the Bible is salvation, why there are less than seventy (70) combined references to Heaven and Hell.
2. Demonstrate why the majority of these references of heaven and hell occur in the New Testament and discuss why the majority of these references occur in the three Gospels according to Matthew, Mark and Luke.
3. Throughout the essay develop the theme of the immortal soul and state of the soul after death. Since the immortal soul is not a concept stated nor implied in the Bible (excepting, perhaps, the parable of Lazarus in the Gospel of Luke), it is permissible to rely on, and quote from, Plato (i.e. The Republic) where this concept is stated and developed for the first time in Western thought. Since logic does not apply, use rhetoric when appealing to goodness, justice, morality and virtue.
4. Using allegory, explain how the limited number of 144,000 virgin males from the tribes of Israel who will enjoy eternity with Jehovah (per the book of Revelation) can be dismissed or marginalized or reinterpreted and applied to all Christian believers regardless of time or location. Allegorize the eternal punishment of Gentiles (per the book of Revelation) for not following Jewish laws.
5. In the writing style of Saint Paul, convince the reader that the intellect and rational thought is inferior and subjugated to feelings and emotion when discussing Christian theological concepts of salvation, heaven and hell. NOTE: Any use of facts in this section will result in a grade of zero for the entire essay.
